How Do Reviews Get on Public Review?

Reviews on Public Review are written by consumers from across the globe. Anyone who has had a recent buying or service experience can write a review for free, as long as they have a Public Review user account, follow our Guidelines for Reviewers, and don’t have a conflict of interest with the business they’re reviewing. A user account must be connected to an email address so we can get in touch for account- and service-related issues.

All reviews about a business are shown on their profile page. This is where consumers can read and write reviews and find other relevant information about the business, such as the overall rating and star rating.

A Public Review can start in two ways:

Consumer's

Consumers who’ve had an experience with a business can create a Public Review account and write an unsolicited review. These reviews, called “organic reviews,” reflect the genuine experiences of consumers. Users simply need to sign up, verify their email address, and share their feedback based on their personal experience with the business.

Business's

Businesses can ask their customers to leave a review using our invitation methods for free. They should ensure there is no bias in how they invite customers to review them. Additionally, businesses are not allowed to offer any sort of payment or incentive for reviews, ensuring the feedback remains authentic and unbiased.

Consumers Own Their Reviews

At Public Review, we recognize reviews as user-generated content that belongs to the authors. Users have complete control over their reviews and can edit or permanently delete them through their accounts. Unless a review is permanently deleted by the user, it remains accessible as long as their Public Review account is active. When an account is deleted, all associated reviews are also permanently removed, in line with our Privacy Policy, ensuring user control and privacy.

This ownership model is essential for maintaining the platform’s integrity, ensuring that reviews remain authentic and reflective of genuine experiences. By allowing users to manage their own content, we uphold a high level of trust and reliability in the feedback shared on our platform.

Fighting Fake Reviews

We are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of our platform by implementing an automated system to detect and remove fake reviews. This system will analyze multiple data points, including IP addresses, user identifiers, device characteristics, location data, and timestamps to identify suspicious patterns. Although this feature is still in development, we are committed to providing a trustworthy environment for genuine feedback and will update users once it is operational.

Our goal is to ensure that authentic customer feedback thrives. As we build this system, we are also creating educational resources to help users recognize and report fake reviews, supporting the overall health of our review community.

Reporting Reviews

Our commitment to openness includes allowing both businesses and consumers to report reviews that violate our guidelines. Users can submit a report form if they believe a review breaches our rules. Our Content Integrity Team reviews each report and takes appropriate action. Reported reviews remain online during the investigation unless flagged as “harmful or illegal,” in which case they are hidden to protect the public and comply with regulations.

We strive for fairness and transparency, giving equal scrutiny to both positive and negative feedback. As we work towards automating this process, our aim is to make reporting reviews efficient and user-friendly, ensuring a trustworthy community where open engagement is encouraged.
